There’s No Room for Neutral: The Urgent Need for An Antiracist Foundation in Behavioral Health

CE Hours 1.25

About this course

Systemic racism has pervasive impacts on those suffering from mental health conditions as well as those engaged in trying to alleviate that suffering. People from marginalized and minoritized communities who are struggling also grapple with discrimination, racism, stigma and microaggressions, putting people from these communities at particularly high risk. The overarching social and historical contexts of systemic racism and discrimination within which mental health issues occur are crucial to enter into our conceptualization and treatments. In addition providers must recognize that, along with our clients, we are affected by and reflective of the structures of the society in which we are immersed, structures which disproportionately disadvantage people from marginalized communities. As a starting point for centering the experiences of people from marginalized communities, we must look internally at the structures, axiomatic beliefs, and practices of our professions and challenge the presumptive universality of our understanding of how best to assess and treat these issues. In doing so it is clear that a stance of clinical neutrality and an individualistic focus are not only inadequate for people from marginalized communities, they are harmful. We explore the urgent need within behavioral health to address the systemic nature of barriers to accessing care, stigma, lack of representation among providers and mistrust of providers who do not possess an adequate understanding of cultural factors. We will explore structural and institutional, as well as interpersonal, manifestations of racism and discuss the importance of social justice approaches in behavioral health.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and explain the roles which providers’ own racial consciousness, awareness of privilege and understanding of bias play in their work with clients from marginalized groups and minoritized identities.
  • Describe the systemic nature and impact of racial trauma on clients with mental health issues.
  • List two ways in which providers can actively engage in antiracist practices in working with people struggling with mental health issues.
  • Examine structural and institutional manifestations of racism and the impact of our internal biases on our clinical work.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Norman Kim, PhD

Norman completed his B.A. at Yale University where he studied music and psychology, and was the recipient of a Mellon Fellowship for Research in Psychiatry. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at UCLA, where he was the recipient of an individual National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health to study the neurobiologic underpinnings of emotion recognition and understanding in Autism. Most recently he has been involved in a multi-site, longitudinal study of children and adolescents at risk for developing bipolar disorder.

In conjunction with his research, Norman has developed an expertise in treating and teaching about psychiatrically complex populations, multi-modal treatment, and diagnostic assessment. While rooted firmly in empirically supported approaches, he has incorporated practices emphasizing somatosensory integration and that draw from eastern and traditional medicine with our current knowledge of the neurobiologic and cognitive processes underlying anxiety, mood, trauma and eating disorders. He has endeavored to develop a clinical approach that focuses on the exploration of meaning as a path to healing and that honors an individual’s’ own narrative and journey.

Norman is a frequent, national speaker and educator, and is a passionate advocate for eating disorder awareness and translating research into clinical practice. He was the co-founder of the Reasons Eating Disorder Center and is a regular national speaker, educator, and advocate for eating disorder awareness. He is on the Board of Directors of the Eating Disorders Coalition, the Eating Disorder Advisory Council for the Joint Commission, and the Clinical Advisory Boards for Recovery Warriors, Spectrum CBT, and Tikvah V’Chizuk. He is the National Director for Program Development for Reasons Eating Disorder and Center for Change.
