Emergent Behavioral Health: Critical Issues in the Pandemic Era

CE Hours 1.25

About this course

The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a host of emergent concerns in clinical psychological settings that warrant greater attention; namely, the social determinants of vaccine uptake and other aspects of health equity, sexual health in the context of the pandemic, and race-based violence and trauma. While typically treated as independent concerns, they are often overlapping and commonly experienced by patients over the past three years. This symposium addresses these new challenges brought and provides suggestions for what clinicians can do to mitigate risks and foster patient well-being.

Learning Objectives

  • Cite examples of historical discrimination and racism in health care settings and its impact on trust in government agencies, healthcare providers, engagement in care, and vaccine acceptance.
  • Discuss influences on vaccine hesitancy to mitigate COVID-19 risks among under-represented populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19 morbidity and mortality.
  • Explain the importance of sexual and reproductive health as a component of mental health and basic sexual health assessment in a mental health context.
  • Articulate the link between historical collective race-based trauma and its individual and community effects.
